Introduction

Conservation is the study of environmental sciences with an aim to protect the biodiversity on Earth. Biodiversity is the variety of life like species, ecosystems and habitats in the world. Conservation focuses to protect a habitat rather than the protection of species. These species require wild life management especially to conserve those species that are rare to found on the Earth. These species are endangered animals or plants that need proper management. This concept is in existence because of the aesthetic value of species. Species has different qualities like uniqueness, public appeal or other factors. People may not believe in this but saving the species requires a large amount of money. In many countries like Canada and United States, etc there are special laws stated, for the protection of these species. They tend to protect the species no matter what is the cost. (Young, Richards et.al, 2007).

A factor behind saving the species is that many of them have some special characteristics. In the United Kingdom and various European countries there is a law named Habitats Directive (1992) which aims to, save and reintroduce the species wherever it is possible on the globe. The conservation programs do require certain costs. All the species bear different characteristics, like some of the species are useful for crops, whereas some are indicators of the environment like lichens and moss that do not survive in polluted air. The term conservation was extracted from the conservation biology.

Extinction

Extinction is the process which occurs when the species of an animal or plant die out. It is the death of each and every member of that species from the world. This process is slow and steady, but to in the past there have been mass extinctions that removed the entity of these species from the world. Experts say that due to the increase in number of humans the animal species are being affected. Even as per an estimate by the year 2100, 50% of the species living on Earth will extinct.

The history presents five mass extinctions, and Earth is considered to be among the sixth distinction. The major causes of the species extinction are climatic variations, changes in the sea levels, disease, spread of the invasive species, andchanges to a habitat. The human activities are also a major reason for the species extinction like hunting, introduction of new species for the purpose of food, and others. The species are given the extinction status on the number of members left of the species (Polidoro, Carpenter et al, 2010). An organization by the name “Union for Conservation of Nature” maintains a special list (Red List) and is dedicated to saving the species in danger. WWF -World Wildlife Fund is also serving as a major organization ensuring the conservation of these precious species.
