ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to survey educators in a given population who are certified in first aid training regarding their knowledge of this information and their perception of its value within their work environment. Ultimately, the long range goal of this study would be enhance awareness of the importance of making first aid training not only a requirement in teacher education programs but also a requirement to maintain their professional license. This could facilitate educators involvement in first aid programs and perhaps stimulate individuals to take these courses on their own to become more knowledgeable, not just for themselves, but for the welfare of their students. First aid knowledge is especially important now with the mainstreaming of special education students who often have medical problems into the regular classroom. The person who is untrained in first aid who renders assistance which is not necessary or detrimental to the recipient also can be rendered liable. This can put educators in double jeopardy situations. Teachers who take proper first aid training and learn how to handle emergencies when they arise not only decrease liability for all concerned, but also provide immediate care for those involved in accidents and life emergencies.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Introduction

While school aged children are likely to have an injury requiring basic first aid or have a health emergency while on school grounds, few teachers and staff are equipped with the knowledge or skills needed to respond to these situations. Many rural counties in Southern West Virginia do not have a school nurse present in every school at all times that students are in attendance. The teacher or staff member is often the adult in charge and frequently the first to respond to injuries as well as emergencies. Therefore, teachers and staff members should be trained and prepared ...
