Work Place Problems

Problem

Currently I am working in a tertiary sector firm that provides services to its customers. The upper hierarchy has developed different types of groups to accomplish a similar objective of providing the best services to its customers so that no complaints are received by the clients. The working groups created by the organisation include people from all casts, culture, race and religion. All sects are mixed together to develop many groups. The essentiality of groups cannot be denied but currently the problem I am facing on workplace is that there is no teamwork among the group I am in, each individual wants to acheive4 his or her goals. One of my group mates has a history that whenever he joins a group that group is not able to achieve success but has achieved a lot of success working as an individual. Therefore, currently I am facing a lot of problems due to lack of team work and team coordination among all the group members.

Methods

Formal groups are designed according to the organisational structure and are assigned a particular task by the upper hierarchy of the organisation on the contrary informal groups are the result of social network of the employees and are not structured formally to achieve a particular task. These groups can be further classified into several subgroups like command groups where individuals report directly to a senior manager, task groups are formulated to complete a special task and friendship groups that are created due to social contacts and similar social backgrounds. Robbins described a five stage model regarding the formulation of groups in an organisation. First stage is the forming stage where the members are not clear about the reason, aims and objectives of the group. At this individuals start to feel that they are part of a certain group. Second stage is the storming stage where all the individuals accept the existence of a group but show some resentment and wants to know the leader of the group. Third is the stage of norming where the group is formally formed and the objectives are made clear to the group members so that they are able to understand the reason of their existence. Last stage for working groups is the performing stage where the group functions properly in order to achieve its objectives.

According to (Robbins, et al., 2009), there are different group properties included in groups that are roles, norms, status, sizes and groups cohesiveness. The role of each group member is defined and each individual is playing his or her role in enabling the group to achieve its task. Different groups are developed to perform different roles in the organisation. Status is defined as the position or rank of the group or its group members in an organisation or ...
