Adaptation in Secondary School Education

Summary of Chapter Eleven

Secondary school education is the transition of college of teen life to adult life. Secondary education prepares students to be ready for the upcoming challenges. However, children with disabilities often found it difficult to move a step ahead after finishing their secondary education, because they are not ready for the upcoming challenges. Chapter eleven of the book “teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities: an applied approach for inclusive environments” by Hamill and Everington, argued that curricular adaptations are necessary for teaching students with disabilities, so that they can better learn and understand what is being taught. This chapter basically defines adaptation and its importance in curriculum.

Curricular adaptations are basically, instructional strategies which intend to facilitate the process of teaching and learning in some students with special educational needs. These strategies aim, from more or less extensive modifications made on the regular curriculum, to be responsive to individual diversity regardless of the origin of those differences: personal history, educational background, motivation and interests, pace and learning style. It is a strategy and action plan to address the educational needs of each student.

Significance of Academic Environment

Creating an academic environment can often be a real challenge. In fact, many students are shocked that you even wish to try. This is a sad state of affairs in our schools today.

Giving Substitutes a Fighting Chance

Do you have a substitute folder? Or at the very least do you have a substitute information sheet with important information? If not, then you really need to consider creating one. Even if you are someone who never uses a substitute, emergencies can arise. It is not hard to create one. This article on creating a substitute folder will give you ideas of what to include.

Respect for the students Diversity

Broadly, a curricular adaptation is understood as the successive adjustments that from an accessible curriculum make a center or a teacher finalize the guidelines proposed by the education authority, bearing in mind the characteristics and needs of their students and their context. In a literal sense, the concept of curriculum adaptation refers to those of more adjustments, which are made while considering exclusively on students with special educational needs that are not mandatory for other students.

Curricular adaptations must be based on two principles:

Principle of Standardization

This principle helps students to benefit wherever possible, the largest number of regular education services.

Principle of Individualization

This principal attempt to motivate each student on the basis of their interests, about their strengths, weaknesses and learning rates, the educational response in each time you need to train as a person.

Types of curricular adaptations

Different types of curricular changes would be part of a continuum, where at one extreme are the many changes habitus a teacher does in his classroom, and the other changes that deviate significantly from the curriculum (Carrier, 1983).
