Advanced Operation Management

Introduction

Lean production is an important concept in the operations management which involves the methodology of assembly line which is important for the manufacturing of automobiles, in the manufacturing of automobiles Toyota came with a different strategy, which is known as the just-in-time production or the Toyota Production System. Furthermore, the lean manufacturing of the Aston Martin is also involved in the just in time inventory but the major difference in the production is based on their target market as the Toyota focuses on both normal use customers and sport users but they are not as successful in this area of operations. (Aladwani, 2002) However, the Aston Martin is specialized in the lean manufacturing of the sports car and targets the different segment of the market. So, both of the companies focuses of the just in time based operations management but the concept was brought in the world of manufacturing by the Toyota which is being followed by the Aston Martin.

Discussion

Many industries which also include the car industry, have implemented the ideology of the lean production. The rules of lean manufacturing can be sum up in the given manner to get the advanced operation management.

Minimize Inventory and Maximize Flow

It is important and significant for the Toyota and Aston Martin that the production should be base on just in time basis as the nature of production is different from general industries. The development of interchangeable parts, production technology has led to the origin of mass production in late 1899 (Bakken, 2008). Frederick W. Taylor has presented some of the principles of scientific management, as these industries began to develop mass production. Taylor was a pioneer in the distribution of work items so that a product can be manufactured and assembled easily. His work led to significant improvements in productivity (Choucri, 2007). In addition, because of standardized manufacturing processes and assembly, quality products manufactured was also positively affected. In addition to this it is also important for the Toyota and Aston Martin that the inventory control measure should be adopted like the use of the just in time inventory system which will help the Toyota and Aston Martin in minimizing the inventory system and maximize the flow of the production. But with the standardization of working methods, the concept of labor standards depends on the standard time of employment, or number of units produced per period. (Belassi and Tukel, 1996)

Eliminate Waste

For an organization like Toyota and Aston Martin that the waste or the raw material that is not important should be eliminate but in modern operation management that is the lean management system it is preferred that the waste should be utilized so that the productivity gets increased.
