1.1 PREPARATION OF THE SURGICAL PATIENT IN THEATRE
Discuss and demonstrate the preparation of the operative site for surgery
Dietary Restrictions
Food intake is generally restricted 6-12 hours before anesthesia to avoid intra- or post-operative emesis and aspiration pneumonia.
Access to water is generally not curtailed.
Sterile Skin Preparation
Sterile preparation begins after the animal has been transported and positioned in the surgical suite.
Gauze sponges are sterilized in a pack along with bowls into which the germicides can be poured.
Sponges are handled with sterile sponge forceps or a gloved hand using aseptic technique.
The dominant hand should be used to perform the sterile preparation, while the secondary hand is used to retrieve sponges from the preparation bowl.
Explain the purpose of skin assessment prior to surgical skin preparation?
Skin preparation is the removal of as many bacteria as possible from the patient's skin through shaving, mechanical washing and chemical disinfection Purpose:
Reduce the number of microorganisms in the field of operation.
Prevent infection.
Special Considerations:
To determine the area to be shaved, know the operation to be done, the organ involved and its location and the proposed incision.
Practice modesty and provide privacy.
Ask the patient's permission in cutting the eyelashes and hair.
Examine the area to be shaved for any signs of irritation or any abnormal conditions. Report this to your head nurse.
Do not cut the patient's skin.
In abdominal operations, pay particular attention to the umbilicus.
