Introduction

Alcohol is considered a drug because it changes the way people perceive the world, feel, and behave. Contradictory to traditional believe the abuse of Alcohol is an official disease which need professional help. A maladaptive outline distinguishes it by the excess consumption of alcohol that negatively affects a person's life in terms of his work, education, social or other areas. Unfortunately the abuser of alcohol tends to continue the use of this substance despite the negative impact it has of his or her life.

Alcoholism

Also referred as the addiction to alcohol, is an unhelpful outline of the consumption behavior of a drinker that shows resistance from leaving the substance and usually involves the increased consumption for a long period, while have problems in trying to reducing it. Some other signs of alcoholism includes' the extensive amount of time spent on the procurement and use of the substance, and the time taken to get out of its effect, while knowing the destructive effect it has on one's life. Against previously held believes, alcoholism is not considered a disease requiring professional help, not a flaw in a person's personality, nor does it reflect in a person's behavior because it affects around 14 million citizens in the US alone, and is the third largest mental illness know. Being a disease, it is one of the prime reasons of low productively, and costs approximately 165 billion dollars a year due to reduced output, and results in deaths before time, and the cost of its treatment (Chartier, 2011, pp. 150-160).

Differentiation of alcohol abuse from alcoholism

Although both alcohol consumption on an abusive level, and alcoholism involves bad behavior and destructive patterns, a person does not tent to require increased amount of the substance to feel intoxicated or in the influence, nor does it include the experience of stretched withdrawal symptoms until the consumer is suffering from alcoholism (Gil, 2002, 12-47).

Risk factors for alcoholism

One of the reason a person develops alcoholism can be due to the low self esteem issues, and the perception of being out of place, which is a very common thing in women. Males and females, who have ever been sexually or physically abused in childhood, are more prone in developing alcoholism. Children who try drinking between the age of 11 and 14 are much more likely to develop alcohol dependency as compared to people who drink eat an earlier or later age (Gil, 2002, 12-47).
