1780: Charleston fell to the British. Benedict Arnold, an American military leader and hero of Saratoga, had been a traitor, made general of British army. 1781: Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown (October 19). 1782: Rhode Island census population of 52,347. 1782 A new British cabinet agrees to recognize the independence of the United States. 1783: Treaty signed in Paris on 3 September.
