Abstract

Employee motivation is an intricate and sophisticated subject; however, contemporary managers must face and deal with this topic to obtain organizational success. To enhance understanding of employee motivation, managers must recognize the imperativeness of employee motivation, its concepts, and differences in individual needs. Subsequently, managers need to be aware of a variety of employee motivational factors and the changes in priorities of these factors over time. Moreover, managers have to learn previous and current motivational programs, examples, and theories behind them because understanding of these fundamentals can enhance their ability to identify rewards systems that could be matched with employee needs. This understanding of the employee motivation process requires a systematic approach, and managers must realize that employee motivation and its process are there to motivate their employees; therefore, employee input must be valued and included throughout this process.

Introduction

Workplace motivation in 21st Century work place is one of the most important aspects of good management. It may be a complex, frustrating issue, but unless it is understood, and managed effectively, few organizations will flourish. (Murphy, 2009) Some writers think that most employees are naturally pre-disposed to enthusiasm for their work, demonstrating an inherent preference for engagement and achievement.

Ironically, it can be managers themselves who dampen this ardour, through either poor management or a lack of understanding of what workplace motivation. It was a line of work where cross-selling was a main focus. One of the motivations used was the reward method and this included both monetarily and award basis. Another method used was to train employees in leadership and management programs, to help them to achieve success in the workplace. They also built inter-departmental teams to assist employees to better understand the various areas of the company and how each department was inter-related to each other. The company focused on group or team rewards and found that this was the most efficient alternative. However, other employers have determined that group rewards create hostility between higher and lower producers within the group because all members of the group receive the same rewards, regardless of performance levels. It has been said that reward programs based on individual performance has the highest probability of job satisfaction and productivity. (Murphy, 2009)

Creating motivation is one of the most examplary element in 21st century. Offering bonuses to each employee in 21st Century work place is one example of monetary reward. Bonuses had a certain criteria that needed to be met such as profitability, products sold, building of client base. The criteria levels help encourage employees to perform a little more aggressively to meet these quotas, goals put into place or finding a way to save the company money.
