Exploring the Forms of Self-Censorship: On the Spiral of Silence and the Use of Opinion Expression Avoidance Strategies

The analysis reveals that the effects of perceived climate strongly correlate with the people choosing to engage in conversation or opinion expression at the expense of understanding the means. The experimental analysis in the study represents opinion expression avoidance as a more likely response when the opinion climate was unreceptive compared to when friendly. According to diverse sources, the spiral of silence is filled with controversy as it adequately accounts for the complexities of opinion formation and change, and whether it greatly oversimplifies the process (Hayes, 2007). Social isolation and perceptions of the climate are two factors that have a significant impact on a person to willingly speak or express an opinion (inclination to freedom of speech). In addition, these factors influence several people due to which they do not fear to raise their voice even though they are in minorities.

The analysis of the study declares that the participants revealed more possibility of using various opinion expression avoidance strategies around an audience thought to be hostile to that opinion. Nevertheless, the study verified the tendency for people to undervalue the power of the situation when they introspect on how they would behave. Hence, it can be asserted that the climate of opinion is one of the many factors that have a significant influence on people's tendency to express their opinions (Hayes, 2007). The process of the experimental design in the study verified the impact of the opinion climate on expression avoidance without the disadvantages inherent in the using of non-experimental methods. The experimental analysis of the climate of opinion overcomes this problem with respect to the quantification and test of the effect of climate of opinion.
