Analyzing PDHPE Syllabus

Introduction

With the immense amount of social as well as environmental pressures faced by students nowadays, teaching Personal Development in a controlled environment is extremely relevant to society as a whole. The PDHPE Syllabus approved by the Board of Studies is very productive and important outlines that can help students as well as parents create accurate expectations over what they may be able to get out of learning this course. To make sure a child grows up healthy, happy and responsible; they must be given relevant education about what to value and how to prioritize these values. Not only this, it encourages children to make decisions in a confident and informed manner. Through Physical Education, students can enjoy sporting activities as well as being able to prolong their involvement in being physically active, which has special importance in children of younger ages who spend a lot of time on computers or indoor activities.

Discussion

It is widely observed that children are required to learn the value of physical activity and how it can have a positive effect on the rest of their lives, and this needs to be instilled in them from a young age. While in some cases, parents want to take this responsibility and perform well, in others, schools and teachers are given the responsibility to teach children the values of themselves and those around them. Physical education is something that cannot be taught at home, but must be regularly observed in order for a child to lead a healthy life.

During Primary School, undertaking the PDHPE course is mandatory for students, as well as other necessary subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment, and Creative and Practical Arts. Through PDHPE, teachers aim to help students realize and develop their personality as well as integrating principles into their life so as to improve its quality. Principles such as planning, analysis and approach to life are encouraged, as well as the promotion of physical activity. It also helps students deal with community issues, such as education on drugs, child protection, sex education and other issues that are necessary in raising a child to be a strong, active and smart individual. The syllabus claims to approach these subjects in a careful manner, so as to represent the school's mission and its values. According to the PDPHE Syllabus, student's parents will enjoy inclusion in all necessary activities, hence enhancing their role in children's lives as well. I believe that this is a very smart move by the Department of Education, as often students tend to alienate parents from their school lives, and do not enjoy their involvement in their “personal” matters. In this way, students may realize the importance of having a close and trusting relationship with both parents and teachers.
