5-HT is a known vasoconstrictor and monoamine neuromodulator that affects various functions of the central nervous system (CNS), such as sleep, mood, emotion, cognitive functions, and biological rhythms. 5-HT biosynthesis is mainly restricted to serotonergic neurons in brain and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Enterochromaffin cells produce and secrete more 5-HT than serotonergic neurons (90% compare to 10%).
