Introduction

The administration or management is a set of very activities consisting of planning, organization, execution and control performed to determine and achieve the objectives identified by the use of humans and other resources. Management as a process can be defined as a set of managerial actions that achieve its goals by converting resources into the product. Management, as a tool, is a set of structures and people, ensuring the use of resources and coordination of all social systems to achieve the desired goals (Coyne and Subramaniam 2000, 61-70).

The organization that I have chosen to reflect management lessons, for the sake of this paper, is Apollo Hospitals. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited (Apollo) is a healthcare services provider. The company owns and manages hospitals, dispensing pharmacies and diagnostic clinics. It also offers consultancy services. The company's service offerings comprise health services at the patient's doorstep, diagnostic and clinical services, third party administration services, health insurance and medical business procedure outsourcing. The company operates in India, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Oman, and the UK. It is headquartered in Chennai, India and employs around 30,640 people. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (Apollo) is engaged in owning and managing hospitals, diagnostic clinics and dispensing pharmacies; providing health insurance; consulting and business processing outsourcing (BPO) operations. The company operates in India, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Oman, and the UK. The company operates through three business segments: hospitals, retail pharmacy and others. The company's hospital segment operates over 8,700 beds across 54 hospitals in India, diagnostic clinics; operates a chain of Apollo Pharmacies; and provides medical BPO and health insurance services (Swaminathan 2009, 204-206).

The company is also engaged in clinical research services. The segment's services offerings include healthcare at the patient's doorstep, clinical and diagnostic services, medical BPO, third party administration services and health insurance. Apollo also provides project management and operations consulting services to other hospitals. The retail pharmacy segment is engaged in managing and selling drugs through its network of 1,199 pharmacy stores. It also offers value added services like home delivery, a nurse station within the premises and a reminder service to customers who require regular supply of prescription medicine. The company also offers medical insurance services through Apollo Munich Health Insurance, a joint venture with Munich Health. Apollo Health Street (AHS) is a BPO company engaged in providing solutions to the Healthcare Industry.

AHS's offerings include a range of outsourcing services catering to hospitals, physicians and payers, and information technology (IT) solutions. Apollo's telemedicine is a provision of healthcare services that uses telecommunication technology and multimedia equipment to provide healthcare solutions over a geographic distance. It includes teleradiology, teleconsulting, telemonitoring, and telesurgery. The company's subsidiaries include Apollo Bramwell Hospitals, Unique Home Healthcare Limited, AB Medical Centres Limited, Samudra Health care Enterprises Limited, Apollo Hospital (UK), Apollo Health and Lifestyle Limited, Imperial Hospital & Research Centre, Pinakini Hospitals Limited, Apollo Cosmetic Surgical Centres, ISIS Healthcare India, and Mera Healthcare (Nah & Dawodu 2007, 92).
