Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of architectural work in the city of Melbourne. Melbourne is known for its huge cultural and heritage values; therefore, it is essential to understand the building structures to get in depth knowledge of the buildings. Melbourne is considered to be as the heart of Australia, tourist from all around the travel to Melbourne to witness such an amazing city. Therefore, in this paper the author giving a chance to the readers to understand some of the famous architectural style buildings of Melbourne.

International Style

Stanhill Flats, located on the 34 Queens Road, Melbourne

International Style

Approximately age: 60-62 years

Description of the Building

The first style selected by the author is the international style and the building author chose in this style is the Stanhill Flats, which is located on the 34 Queens Road, Melbourne. The building was constructed during the years of 1948-1950, and the main motive of constructing this building was for the residential purpose. However, after almost 62 years this building still using as a residential building.

Notable Features

The architect of the building was the Frederick Romberg, who was considered as one of the finest architect in the history of Melbourne. Stanhill flats is a 9 story building consisting of 2 bedroom flats, which was built and reinforced from concrete, steel and plate glass in post war international style. The structure of the building is amazing in such a way that whole building lifted from the ground with concrete pillars, which fabricate the effect of weightlessness (Stanhill Flats, 2012).

Post Modernism

Description of the Building

The second architectural style selected by the author is the Post Modernism style. In this style, the author selected one of the finest building in Melbourne named as 1 Collin Street. The building located on the street named as 1 Collin Street. The building was built in 1983-1984 for the office purpose. The building set as example for the eighties period as Post Modern style building. The building is still used as an office building.

Distinguished Features

1 Collins Street represented as one the initial and original post modern office building, which was built in such a short period of time. The building was developed in the Melbourne City Centre. The most notable feature of the building is that it was built in a step up form finishing in a turn tower effect. The building was built in sympathetic materials that give it a look of stone like cladding (1 Street Collins, 2012).
