Introduction

Gender role is a set of behaviors, attitudes and values that society sets as appropriate or inappropriate for each genre. Gender roles are the expression of the behaviors and attitudes through which an individual is determined. Today the world is developing at a very fast pace and individual are no more restricted in any aspect, whether its education or any profession, every individual has the right to choose what he or she likes. In spite of so much development, both males and females are restricted by gender roles but women have a higher percentage of being restricted by gender roles.

Discussion

It has been highly discussed and debated as, whether men are more restricted by gender role or women? In my opinion women are more restricted by gender roles. Today the roles of each gender are flexible. Individuals have progressed beyond the traditional sex roles and in search of a wellness lifestyle, have integrated aspects of femininity and masculinity within their self concept. Individuals have the option of expressing any inappropriate behavior in a situation, instead of limiting their reactions to traditional gender roles. Today's human beings are able to select from an array of performance of femininity and masculinity, based not on sex role standards but what most satisfies them. This is termed as an androgynous perspective of livings which promotes an individual sense of wellbeing and makes humans effective (Renzetti & Curran, 1999).

Unfortunately, women still face hard time when they opt for a profession or anything which does not relate to feminist approach and is linked with masculinity.
