Introduction

The purpose of this research paper is to make an analysis on the technological assessment of CFCL. These are types of web editor software used to design and develop web pages incorporating features such as graphics, multimedia and user interactivity (Day 2009).

Technical Issues at CFCL

Server operating systems

These are the core operating systems that enable the web server to run. The most common types are:

Windows Server 2000, 2003 or 2008

Unix

Linux

Web server software

This software sits on top of the operating system and actually runs the web hosting services. It deals with all elements of hosting the web pages, including requests from visitors to view them, and running programs or scripts (Gann 2000). The most common types of web server software are:

Apache

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)

Web authoring languages

These are the software languages used to develop applications on the website. Examples of these include:

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) - a programming language used in the creation of simple web pages (Fisher 2006).

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts that are used to produce dynamic and interactive web pages. Examples include JSP, PHP, ASP, Cold Fusion and Perl (Ethiraj 2007).

Application development tools

Examples include Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Flash. A large number of ISPs now provide online tools for creating simple websites - these can provide the end-user with a website very quickly without the need to create any HTML code (Day 2004).

Databases

Database technologies are used to store large quantities of information that can be used to update information on your website. The solutions available to you will depend upon the volume of information you wish to hold and the likely web traffic that the system will have to support. (Danneels 2002)

Examples of high volume, high traffic database systems include:

Microsoft SQL Server

Oracle 10g

PostgreSQL

MySQL

An example of a smaller volume system handling lower web traffic is Microsoft Access.

E-commerce

There is a range of e-commerce software packages that can be used for the development of an e-commerce site, on either a third party or in-house basis (Danilovic 2007). These are based upon templates that can be adapted to meet your own requirements. The resultant code and pages are then uploaded onto the web server and provide a cheaper and quicker option than bespoke development (Constantin 2004).

Business Issues at CFCL

Conflict

Conflicts between IS projects can be some of the most difficult to solve. There is a crucial decision that companies must make at the beginning of a data warehouse project, and this is whether or not the DW development group should be connected to a group that works with transaction processing, or should the DW group be independent (Clark ...
