Bar-code medication administration technology- Key stakeholders and Role of This Project in Nursing

Consistency of Bar Code project with the role of nursing in society

Medical advances with the introduction of new therapies, among which drug therapy, have achieved a progressive increase in the average stay in hospital admissions, alongside an increase in patients admitted for increased activity. Inpatient units consisting of a number of beds assigned to one or more medical services. However, the traditional view and static medical service provided with a number of beds has amended, inter alia, by increased demand and the collapse of emergency departments in general, exacerbated by the seasonal health problems in certain population groups. These events cause the saturation of certain services, which results to a significant alteration of the scheduled activity, not only quantitatively but qualitatively requiring the admission of patients in hospitals and decreased attention by medical staff and increased chances of errors (Turner et al., 2003).

Given the importance of identifying the problems of safety with the incidence of errors, there is considerable lack of prior studies in such areas. Although not quantified, this situation is known and has generated great interest and concern in hospitals in general and in the field of nursing in particular. In the point of care dedicated to elderly and children, it is noteworthy that errors associated with medication administration are considered as risk areas of special emergency units (Traynor 2004).

Among the factors causing the higher incidence of errors include the need for accurate dose calculation drug, lack of availability of suitable material, available concentrations of the same drug and a high number of drug administrations per patient.

Given the importance of Bar-Code Technology, it is important to discuss the role of nursing with relevance to this project. The role of nursing, considered the "personal boundary" between the organization and users is key, given their level participation and influence in all processes, both operational, management, and in the coordination and involvement of all health activities. The nursing team is the largest professional group of hospital. This project will enable nurses to deliver nursing care, oriented toward active, thoughtful and structured activities to provide individualized care, defined, developed and evaluated according to the principles of scientific evidence (Rough et al., 2003).

As described above, hospital processes are characterized by intensifying work together with greater complexity of problems most of the patients treated, whose processes are resolved in a shorter period of time. Surely this means greater difficulty in providing care.

This problem is adequately dealt with if the project of Bar-Code Technology is implemented. It increases the multipurpose nature of the general nurse, while simultaneously providing a wealth of experience and knowledge of problems of patients and highly adaptable to new demands, the rotation and mobility of nurses by many and various uni-hospital activities, is a general situation, which involves risk for patient safety (Sakowski et al. 2005).
