Becoming a Physician

Thesis Statement

With the kind of training I had as a Nurse aid for two years, I decided to pursue a career as physician assistant.

Introduction

Being a physician is very important to me, and I believe that I have much to offer to the medical field. My sister is currently a medical resident and my mother was a doctor for many years. I grew up in a household where intelligence, perseverance, and hard work were highly prized and have carried that opinion with me into adulthood, as I know that anything can be accomplished when it is believed in and worked for strongly enough. In addition, my ability to speak several different languages fluently will be a benefit in communicating with the diverse patients that are often seen.

Analysis

To me the ideal doctor would be a man endowed with profound knowledge of life and of the soul, intuitively divining any suffering or disorder of whatever kind, and restoring peace by his mere presence. These were the words of the Swiss philosopher, writer, and poet Henri Frydyrick Amiel that will always be my guiding principle as I pursue the field of medicine and become a physician assistant in the future. Early in life, I have heard my parents and relatives discussed issues related to medical procedure, health care and the need for preventive medicine. As there were some relatives who needed medical attention in those days, I felt that there was a strong force that ignited my curiosity to know about the causes of various illnesses, diseases and disorders and the steps that we need to undertake to help people such as my relatives get medical treatment, gain a better quality of life, and become productive members of our society.

Physician assistants are licensed to practice medicine, under the supervision of a physician, and are the physician's second in command. They provide a myriad of services, as well as, a wide-range of responsibilities. These responsibilities include, but no limited to conducting complete examinations and physicals, providing treatment, counseling patients, and, in certain cases, prescribe medicine. Physician assistants are trained to diagnosis and treat medical problems. The relationship between a physician and the physician assistant is tight knit. I have the skills and ability to endure the rigorous education-training to become a physician assistant. I am an active learner. I understand new information, which I apply for current or future problem solving. I exercise logic and my reasoning skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of possible approaches, resolution, and conclusions to the problem at hand. Inductive and deductive reasoning are key traits a physician assistant must have. It is imperative that a physician assistant can apply several pieces of information and apply the pieces to specific obstacles to produce a whole. I have the desire and determination to study hard and stay an active learner.
