Birth Order and personality

Abstract

We can define birth order as the rank of a person by his age amongst his or her siblings. Experts have shown their belief that Birth order can have a heavy and persistent effect on cognitive development of a person. There are numerous variables in the birth order that affect the child, which includes the gap between two children, sex of the siblings, etc. The birth order amongst a set of children can have a substantial impact on the personality of a child and his or her relationship with his or her parents. Amongst the number of researches conducted on birth order, Burton had concluded that the difference between siblings was not large enough, and the birth order did not have an effect on the IQ of a child. Breland found out in his research that birth had a significant impact on the verbal ability of a child. Researches by Wark and Bradley had shown that birth order had had a positive impact on first born child, as they had shown that first child in the family had gone for more education. However, the birth order had a positive impact for smaller children, as they were more likely to get involved in extra-curricular activities, as compared to older children in the family.
