What is Black History?

An annual observance in February that highlights and celebrates the history and achievements of African Americans. This tradition of honoring contributions that African Americans have made to all walks of American life and recalling important milestones in black history began in 1926, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), a noted African American author and scholar, began what was then called Negro History Week.
