Calculator

Definition

A calculator is a device used to perform arithmetic computations. Although contemporary calculators frequently integrate a computer for general purpose are designed to perform certain operations rather than to be flexible. For example, there are calculators that specialize in fields such as mathematical graphs trigonometry and statistics. They also tend to be more portable than most computers, although some PDAs have sizes similar to typical models of calculator. Since calculators are cheap and easily affordable to everyone, they are a reliable piece of information that occupies around the size of a pocket.

Background

Summing the first machine was invented by French mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) in 1642. It was a calculating machine that could add and subtract. It had wheels, each scarf its border with the numbers 1 to 10. When the wheel on the right, representing the units, giving a full turn, meshed with the wheel to its left, and represented the tens, and a notch ahead. If the correct numbers were introduced there was no possibility of error. Pascal patented the final version in 1649, but it is a commercial failure, it was too expensive.

The German mathematician Leibniz Whilelm Gotfried (1646-1716) invented a calculating machine in 1693, which exceeded that of Pascal. While the latter could only add and subtract, the Leibniz could multiply by automatic repetition of the sum, and divide by automatic repetition of the subtraction.

The first electromechanical calculator was invented by American Herman Hollerith (1860-1929), it ran on punch cards. Hollerith eventually founded a company dedicated to building these machines, the company International Business Machines Corporation would generally known as IBM
