Neurological Rehabilitation Case Study

Abstract

This retrospective single case study describes the usefulness of providing enriched therapeutic environment in improving well-being and diversity of activity of daily living (ADL) in nursing home setting for patient with neurological deficits. In addition, the study analysis whether patient program were tailored according current National Health Service (NHS) policies. This is a case report about 55 years old lady who suffered from peculiar neurological disorder called vestibular schwannoma (VS). Post-discharge from acute hospital, a patient had intensive therapy. A variety of standard outcome measures were employed to assess the different components of neuroplasticity changes and its impact on her functional ability and quality of life (QoL). The access to intensive and integrated multi professional approaches is important to maximising patient's independence and minimising disability.

Neurological Rehabilitation Case Study

Introduction

This retrospective single case study aims at demonstrating intervention of multi professions providing enriched therapeutic environment according to the current policies in nursing home setting and how it enhances the patient's ADL and QoL. In addition, the neuroplasticity changes were quantified by standard outcome measures. A comprehensive literature search was used using Pubmed central, Embase, Medline, Ovid, Google and Science Direct electronic databases. The keywords that were used include “therapy”, “nursing homes”, “activities of daily living”, “rehabilitation”, “national policy” “neurological conditions” and “vestibular schwannoma”. The core evidences are included since year 2002 and evidence particularly focused on neurological conditions (e.g. stroke) or related to other conditions or other pathologies are excluded. It is very curial to understand pathophysiological changes of VS before discussing case study.

Aim of case study paper

The aim of this paper is to examine and study a neurological rehabilitation case study in the light of current research and development in the field. The paper applies relevant theories and suggests interventions for the patient in the light of policy framework as given by Department of Health (DoH). The discussion suggests that these interventions are in compliance with models of disability and rehabilitation practice.

About Vestibular schwannoma or VS

Vestibular schwannoma commonly referred to as Acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour that has an irregular growth pattern. Hence, the management of the medical condition requires personalized approach in that the risks and chances of recovery are weighed keeping in view the vital signs of the patient as there are post-operative complications involved. Some of the factors that should be taken into account in the management of the medical condition of the patient include the medical status of the patient, structures involved, current size of the tumour as well as the rate of growth, speech discrimination scale results, patient's age, facial nerve functional status, and type of tumour.
