Case Study, “Morale And Motivation In The Canzalian Credential Assessment Unit”

Introduction

Motivation is described as, "an internal state that arouses, directs and sustains behaviour". In other words, motivation is an inner feeling that determines the continuation or cessation of an activity. There are two types of motivation. The first is known as intrinsic motivation. This motivation comes from within oneself. The activities that individuals make are their own reward. People are motivated because they sincerely love the work that they are doing. The second motivation is called extrinsic motivation. For those who are extrinsically motivated, their rewards are external factors. These people do their job to earn a reward or avoid punishment. Most people are extrinsically motivated. Our society (in different spheres of activity) places much emphasis and pressure on performance rewards and efficient. That makes it very difficult to be intrinsically motivated.

In a world where everything goes to a blistering pace, we would expect that the greatest challenge of management professionals in their work environment is rapidly changing technology, the need to stay ahead of the competition or raising capital. However, if you asked a manager or a team leader, the answer would be different: the biggest challenge is the management and employee motivation. All other issues, although they are also important, become secondary if you have difficulty inspiring your troops (Andersen, Cooper, et al, 2007, p. 170-172).

Another important aspect in the work place is the morale of the employees. Concern for the morale of all the employees is the responsibility of the employer. People will be more proud of their work, engaged and more productive if they enjoy their work and will feel good in it. A happy employee means satisfied employers, because the boss will not lose money due to inefficiency and lost time. Improving employee morale can be achieved quite easily. One way is to show recognition. Recognition for a job well done and thanks for the realization of the employee will enjoy, encourage and motivate further them further, forceful action. It is a mistake on the part of employers that they only interaction with employees when there is no problem. We must accompany them and support primarily in the difficult and decisive moments. It is no secret that getting random, unexpected rewards from the management can significantly raise the morale of the team. Such manifestations of attention as a joint lunch, tickets to an event where the employee can go along with his wife, or buying a new coffee machines for office - speak louder than words, "We appreciate you” (Arnett, Laverne, et al, 2002, p. 90-91).
