RICH INTERNET APPLICATIONS (RIA)

Introduction

It is easy to see that web pages that we use today resemble little or very little to those that were used in the early Internet. Currently, many web sites are able to be surprised by the graphic design for their informational design, by the content offered or many other aspects few years ago were absolutely unthinkable. Surely, one of the most surprising is related to the user's usage pattern: in the beginning, the paradigm of interaction is characterized by the lack of interaction elements (primarily links and form elements) and where the page is represented as the smallest unit of information, so that any request by the user involved a full charge of it all.

Currently, there are many technologies, proprietary and non proprietary, they are able to enter on the web the paradigm of desktop application. That is, to create web applications with two key features: High interactivity with the user, through a multitude of interactive elements that were previously only viable desktop environments (such as menus, trees, sliders, etc..), Programmable by any user event (such as mouse click, keystroke , drag and drop, etc..) and a fully customizable visual appearance.

A high speed of response to user interaction. The smallest unit of information is desired by the developer: a label, a table or perhaps the whole page. Thus, it is possible to get an immediate response to user actions, by downloading only the data absolutely necessary.

Example of an RIA interface

No doubt this type of application, which usually is called Rich Internet Applications or Rich Internet Applications (RIA), can substantially improve the user experience on the web. However, there are at least two aspects to keep in mind:

Usability. The model of interaction in conventional pages is extremely simple but extremely clear. In the RIA, developers can create, use and customize sophisticated new interactive elements that let you create quite complex interfaces that in some cases, rather than help the user, can cause confusion and doubts about its use (Nielsen, 2007).

Web Accessibility. In many cases, advances in technology pose a threat to web accessibility. Now, in regard to conventional pages, web accessibility has been a journey of more than a decade and can say that there is no technical reason to justify the non-accessibility. A journey that, unfortunately, is not sufficient to give access to all the changes that have come from the hand of the RIA. Although both are very interesting, this article will focus on the second paragraph: web accessibility in the RIA.

Building A Rich Website

To understand the problems of accessibility of the RIA, it should first analyze the technologies used and how they develop. In general, a rich website can be created using two models: Using standard technologies, such as (X) HTML, CSS or JavaScript. By using embedded technologies, using a certain brand (X) HTML that allows you to run ...
