Silicon neurons to emulate electro-physiological behavior of real neurons. This can be done at many different levels, ranging from simple models (e.g., arising neurons integrate and fire) to simulate several models of ion channels and the detailed morphology. Many different types of hardware implementations of neural models have been proposed since 1940 (shortly after the proposal of the neuron McCulloch-Pitts), using whatever technology was available at that time. Hardware implementation is often the only means of modeling neurons and neural computation, while faster than digital computers became available.
