Citizen Journalism and its effect on Society

Introduction

Citizen journalism is based on the participation of common public or citizens in communicating news and information to media. it is different from community journalism and civil journalism as both belong to professional journalism. The directory of social media tools could possibly run on for paragraphs, and today's technology transformed so quickly that many industries, including firms and news media, can hardly keep up.

Traditionally, corporations, governments, newspapers and other leading organizations had to give the information and news to the public and readers read it, believe it and perceived in a way media wants. But this technique has started to transform and now, it's difficult to gain public's attention and that's the reason, public itself is involving in transferring information to the media or sometimes upload it on internet in the form of videos and pictures (Gordon, Kittross, Reuss, eds, 1996, pp. 85-94). This has reduced the importance of photographer in journalism.

Discussion

Photography plays a major role in disseminating and collecting news and events in journalism. It is called as photojournalism in which news and events are supported by videos and images of the story to be explained clearly. It is the way to make public understand the full story in the form of both words and pictures. Involvement of general public in gathering and communicating information has created many issues in society. They are not hired by any professional media and publication; they just take photographs and attached stories of their own and publish it either on internet or give it to other media organizations. This leads to create misconception among viewers and perceive it as a true story or information published by common public.
