Introduction

Westmorland is an area of North West England and one of the 39 historic counties of England. It formed an administrative shire from 1889 to 1974, after which the entirety of the county was soaked up into the new shire of Cumbria.

At the time of the Domesday publication in 1086 parts of the county were advised to either pattern part of Yorkshire or be within the distinct kingdom of Scotland, having historic been associated with the Kingdom of Strathclyde. The Normans conquered the area that is today Cumbria in 1092 throughout the reign of William II and created the baronies of Kendal and Westmorland which were originally distinct jurisdictions with separate sheriffs, but were formed into a lone county of Westmorland in 1226/7.. Before 1226 the Barony of Kendal was attached to the Earldom or Honour of Lancaster while that of Westmorland was part of the Earldom of Carlisle.

The historic county boundaries are with Cumberland to the north, County Durham and Yorkshire to the east, and Lancashire to the south and west. Windermere types part of the western boundary with Lancashire north of the sands, and Ullswater part of the boundary with Cumberland.

The largest point of the shire is Helvellyn at 950m (3,117 ft). According to the 1831 census it enclosed an locality of 485,990 acres (1,966.7 km2).

Appleby, the historic county village, formed a historic borough and was unreformed by the Municipal companies Act 1835; although reform came subsequent in 1885. Kendal was restructured as a municipal borough in 1835.

Westmorland is established in the fertile Imperial Valley in Southeastern California.  We are a little residential community that is seated along state main road 86.  Westmorland is 12 miles south of the Salton Sea, 87 miles southeast of Palm jumps, 122 miles east of San Diego, 192 miles southeast of Los Angeles, 261 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, and 31 miles north of Mexicali, Mexico.

Modern history

In 1889, under the localized Government proceed 1888, a county assembly was created for Westmorland, taking purposes from the Quarter meetings. Westmorland did not contain any shire boroughs all through its history so the administrative shire, or locality under the command of the shire assembly, was coterminous with the geographic county. The shire assembly was founded at Kendal, instead of the historic county village of Appleby-in-Westmorland.

Aside from the two municipal boroughs of Kendal and Appleby, the localized Government proceed 1894 split up the county into urban localities and country localities.

In 1905 a new Shap built-up locality was formed, while Windermere soaked up the neighbouring Bowness UD.
