Analysis of Research Objectives

Cloud computing is a model of computing whereby individuals or firms obtain, for a fee, computing power and software applications via the Internet. Essentially it is a rental of computer hardware and software for the purpose of running a business. In many ways it reduces the amount and type of resources one must obtain in order to successfully and cost effectively run a business. This is a very popular and growing strategy used by companies that have significant computing power needs—such as video sharing and storage as well as ecommerce. Cloud computing is one of the fastest-growing forms of computing, and according to Gartner Research, was approximately a $56 billion industry in 2009 and is expected to grow to $150 billion by 2013 (Giard 2010, pp. 1).

Cloud computing services are being offered by many well-known companies including Amazon, Verizon, and AT&T. However, many of the users and providers of cloud services are medium sized businesses. For example, July Systems (a partner of Amazon Web Services) is a mobile media company that delivers mobile Internet publishing and distribution for clients that include CBS Sports, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated. One of its core services is “Mi Channel,” which provides a robust, cost-effective way for companies to distribute feature-rich mobile platforms.

July's platform helps an organization like CBS Sports deliver real time updates, schedules, statistics, and standing as well as photo and video interaction modules that may take place during live games. The cutting edge of sports content delivery will be highly contingent on the success of cloud computing platforms and their ability to help keep organizational client costs contained (Halton 2007, pp. 3).

Cloud computing is utility computing or grid computing, or software-as-service or managed service. But the opposite is not true. Of all these concepts, more familiar to the user takes one or several principles, but with their own dynamics there is to know understanding. In addition to being influenced by these technologies, as well as trends toward virtualization, automation, massively parallel processing and service orientation, cloud computing is emerging as a result of expectations created by Web 2.0 among users
