Comparative Study of floods in UK and Australia

Abstract

Our study aims to expound that the most common health related issues caused by floods is malaria and psychological fear. Flood is the occupation by the water in areas that are usually free of it. Malaria is an infectious, vector-borne disease caused by the plasmodium parasite. Our study will focus on questionnaire technique to extract the results from our sample. The sample size of the study will be 300 individuals who directly experienced the floods. The data analysis will assign points based on the results extracted and will see if the outcomes yield more than 50% of the results.

Introduction

Flood is the occupation by water in areas that are usually free of it. It is caused by overflowing rivers, by heavy rainfall or snowmelt, or seas by the rise of tide above the normal level or landslides caused by tsunamis. Flood has immensely affected United Kingdom and Australia in the last decade. The recent Australian flooding categorically explicates the causes and effects of flood. The flood causes enormous number of diseases and psychological stress (Baxter, 2008). The most common disease caused by flood is malaria which is common in both the flood events of United Kingdom and Australia.

Research Aims and Objectives

To compare the floods of Australia and United Kingdom that occurred in the last decade;

To expound the outcomes of floods in both regions in terms of diseases caused;

Our hypothesis is that the most common health related issues caused by flood is malaria and psychological fear.

As our hypothesis is based on the thought the most common health factors amongst the people affected by flood is malaria (from physical illness point of view) and psychological fear.

Discussion

River floods are natural processes that have occurred periodically and have been the cause of the formation of the plains in river valleys, fertile land where traditional agriculture has developed in the valleys and shores. In coastal areas, the ravages of the sea have helped to shape the coast and create wetlands and ponds and lakes that, following its occupation atopic, have become vulnerable areas (Packard, 2007).

Floods occur when streams and rivers overflow their banks and inundate the adjacent lands, called floodplains. In other instances, localized flooding occurs when drains cannot cope with heavy rainfall and along shorelines from sea surges that can be wind driven or associated with storms. Since all rivers flood and human activities frequently take place on the relatively flat flood-plains, the consequences of flooding can be disastrous. Thus, the simple definition of flooding belies a complex of causal mechanisms that involve physical processes of the natural environment and social, economic, and political forces operating in the human environment. It is these factors in combination that determine the magnitude, severity, and ultimately the impacts of flooding. Thus, globally, floods are the most widely experienced natural disaster, causing property damage, economic disruption, and loss of life. At the same time, there are positive outcomes from flooding. Floods provide soil moisture for regions in which flood recession agriculture is practiced and can deposit nutrient-rich sediments to fertilize farmlands.
