Introduction

It is quite certain to say that all educational institutions play an integral role in our lives. A student that spends 15 years in high school and then joins a college has the ability to identify many prominent differences. A student may experience a culture shock when he/she encounters the academic and social differences that exist between schools and colleges.

Discussion

One of the most prominent differences that draw a thick line between a college and high school is the level of individual attention given to a student by a teacher. It is very certain that the faculty members in high school tend to pay more attention to all of their students at individual level, as they do not have to deal with a bulk of students (Zmuda & Tomaino, 2001). Therefore in colleges lecturers and faculty members do not focus much on individual needs and therefore often do not tend to pay individual attention to a student if required. Based on this difference, it would be very wise of a student to prepare himself/herself as much as possible and make the most of the individualized attention paid towards him/her in high school.

Another major factor that reflects a difference between a college and a high school is that high school in most cases is free to attend and is mandatory. Many people argue that since high school is mandatory and students are forced to attend it, they often get demotivated due to this. The parents and teachers both force the children to attend high school. Similarly, students do not have any say regarding the selection of the classes and subjects as the time table and syllabus is pre-arranged.
