Comparison of Global Village School and the Hull House

Introduction

Learning service is a social service provided to the community by training, educating and facilitating the community with various services. Quincy Jones once said “Imagine what a harmonious world it could be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing”. Service Learning started in 1960s in America, when after the World War II black and minorities faced discrimination in terms of employment, education and shelter. Many social organizations helped the community to get out of trouble and Hull House was one such organization.

Global Village School offers schooling services for students all over the world, while Hull Houses rendered services of shelter, education and entertainment. Global Village School offered services specializing in schooling, while Hull House offered services in various areas. Hull house was established way back in late 1890s, while Global village school started operation in 1994.

Global Village School and the Freedom's Bureau are two organizations working to serve the people of United States. The objective of both organizations is to provide excellent social services that could benefit the citizens of the country. They are very renowned, as they offer unique services, which are appreciated by the people of United States. They offer services in their areas of expertise.

Hull House is the name of a pioneering institution of the settlement movement in Chicago. The Hull House was built in 1889, Near West Side neighbourhood. It was co-founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, shortly before a visit to London. It opened its doors for European immigrants. In 1911, a significant development took place, and it grew to 13 buildings. Later in 1912, it also started its beneficiaries with the summer camp, providing educational, social and artistic programs. The Hull House was not only a centre of neighbourhood support and adult education meant for the predominantly Italian-speaking part of the city's population, but also a social science research institution. The Hull and subsequent mansions kept on developing with different buildings and mansions, in order to keep up with the growing demands (Armstrong & Julian Smith, 10-17).

On the other hand, the Global Village School offer services of home customizable k-12 schooling. It provides these services, with online text and text based curriculum. It not only offers its services to the domestic students, but also provides services to students worldwide, which pursue to avail the schooling education from their homes. The school promotes justice, diversity and peace among students. Individuals are given particular importance, and the specialized training and education is provided to all students. It provides services on an equal basis, and there is no discrimination on the basis of cast, color or the nationality of students (Glowacki & Hendry, pp. 80-95).

Thesis Statement

The Freedman's Bureau and the Global Village School both offered social services to the community without any discrimination. Global Village specialized in education, while Hull House provided services of education, training, entertainment and shelter.
