Introduction

One of the most promising technologies and discussed in this decade is to be able to communicate computers using technology wirelessly. Connecting computers using radio waves or infrared light is currently being extensively investigated. Discussion

There are two broad categories of wireless networks:

Long Distance: These are used to convey information in spaces that can vary from one city or even several surrounding countries (better known as Metropolitan Area Networks MAN); their transmission rates are relatively low, from 4.8 to 19.2 Kbps.

Short Distance: These are mainly used in corporate networks whose offices are located in one or more buildings that are not far removed from each other, with speeds of the order of 280 Kbps to 2 Mbps (Lewis & Davis, 2004).

The main advantages of wireless versus wired networks are:

Mobility: Freedom of movement is one of the most obvious benefits of wireless networks. A computer or other device (such as a PDA or a webcam) can be placed anywhere within the coverage area of the network without having to depend on whether or not it is possible to get a cable to this site. You no longer need be tied to a cable to surf the Internet, print a document or access to resources.
