Introduction

This paper discusses a contemporary nursing theory named Orem's self care deficit theory which was developed by Dorothea Orem during 1959 and 2001. The Orem model of nursing which is another name for the theory is used in primary care settings in which the patient is encouraged to be independent. The idea of proposing this theory was to highlight the fact that all the patients aim to care for themselves. In this way, they can have a speedy recovery. However, for this it is essential for the patients to be provided with the opportunity to perform self-care to ensure that they take care of themselves in the best way.

Discussion

Contemporary theories in nursing are different from what they were previously. This is marked significantly by the features and the changes that the new theories offer. Health is a very important and sensitive issue that has to be dealt with seriously. Moreover, it is also a human need and, therefore, contemporary theories such as Orem model of nursing should be implemented to encourage the patients to take care of themselves instead of relying on the nurses. The goal of the nurses is to ensure as well as to promote safety of the patients by ensuring that all the legalities have been met, and quality services are provided to patients. Rules for the health care industry are formulated by the federal, state and local regulatory agencies (Sigma Theta Tau International, 2011).

Concept Statement

The conceptual framework plays a major role in determining the implementation of the theories that have been formulated. The Orem model of nursing that has been developed to encourage the patients to take care of themselves. The aim of the theory is to provide assistance to the clients to meet their requirement themselves. There are four main concepts of the Orem model of nursing are mentioned below.

Self care

Self care agency

Therapeutic self-care demand

Self care deficit

There are also two concepts that are related to the roles of the nurses as well as the responsibilities. There are many other concepts that are linked with the theory that include factors such as gender, age and elements in the health care system. When the patients cope up with their diseases, they need support of their family. Moreover, appropriate nursing diagnosis, outcomes, and interventions are also required for the patient to recover. The concept of Orem's model is to enable the individuals to maintain their own health and well-being. However, during this, the family plays a major role since it also determines health and functioning of an individual. Self-care is therefore required because it is essential f or oneself to take action to improve health. Moreover, self care agency is the ability that is acquired by patients who is affected because of the conditioning factors that include family system and age.
