Corked Bats

ABSTRACT

For this paper, we shall be discussing “Corked Bats” at length. The main focus of the research is on “Corked Bats” and its association with “team psychology of baseball players”. The research also analyzes several aspects of “the designing and development of making a corked bat” and tries to assess its impact on “the overall team performance on accounts of their use”. Finally the research tries to explain the overall effect of “Corked Bats” and gives out a critical analysis of liability and the current stance of the work that has been done consequently.

CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Research

After about six weeks using the corked bat, the Bambino and the Yankees were informed by American League president Ban Johnson that the bat was illegal. An article that ran in several papers across the country as early as August 14, 1923, quoted Johnson as stating that the “special bat George Ruth is now using does not conform to the regulations prescribed by the rules and must be discarded at once.” A week later, however, Johnson's decision was clarified. Apparently, it was not the numerous pieces of wood that were of concern, but the glue that held the pieces together. Interestingly, it was not until 1940 that the applicable statute (Rule 15) was amended to require that the bat be made of one piece of hard wood. Incidentally, following his initial decision, Johnson cracked down on other illegal bats, as well. The Chicago Tribune ran the following article by Irving Vaughan on August 22.

Now there have been several accounts and critics on the adoption and usage of this bat in several baseball games. For instance, it is not clear whether or not the four-piece “Quadrebuilt” bat is related to another laminated bat that was patented just a few months earlier, on April 3, 1923, by one Frank Sadenwater of Michigan City, Indiana. Sadenwater's patent (#1,450,646) was for “a ball bat comprising flat, parallel laminations of wood having the grain extending longitudinally of the bat and alternating laminations of wood having the grain extending crosswise of the bat, such laminations being joined by a bonding agent.”

Challenging behavior and learning disabilities involved has been a topic of discussion under several disciplines of management, psychology, anthropology, ethics to name a few. This paper shall help us understand the several facets of challenging behavior in a holistic concept. This paper shall be both reflective and at the same time backed by evidence of what are the causes, signs and symptoms of challenging behavior that may occur or are already present in the personality of a particular person. Finally we shall be providing recommendations for accounts of making and drawing significant conclusions upon how to go about assessing challenging behaviors and ultimately finding solutions for certain individuals who maybe going through such problems.
