Introduction:

Poetry is a unique and captivating method of expression of feelings, which is employed for presentation of sentiments as well as for certain other purposes. Analyzing poetry is an excellent and outstanding method for getting a better understanding of any culture or to get acquainted with the prevailing norms and values in a society. Poets not only capture the true essence of culture but also inculcate events and happenings from everyday life, which assist in getting a better understanding and getting the bigger picture.

A number of poets, from different cultures and societies, have used poetry as a method of expressing their love for the country, or the problems the country/ the society is facing, or simple to describe the society in a graceful and easily understandable manner. The poets of different areas and regions employ different methods of expression, and the differences also assist in identifying the origin of poetry.

It is observed that poets from all parts of the world share some similarities as well as some differences, which are mostly quite prominent and can be easily observed. These similarities and differences also describe the differences in thinking pattern of the societies and the prevailing condition. The poets present a true to life picture of the prevailing norms and values of the society, and most of the historians use poetry as a means of getting correct and trustworthy information regarding any society (Damon and Livingston, 2009).

Discussion:

The songs 'Singh Song' and 'Praise song for mother' contain a number of similarities, as writers of both of them are immigrants settled in Britain, and are trying to describe and bear the discrimination posed against the immigrants. Both the songs intent to celebrate and praise the natives (both the poets have talked about their respective indigenous people) and also describe their issues and problems in a poetic and sophisticated manner. The basis of the songs is poets' own experiences and the stories they have heard from their ancestors, thus concentrating on their traditions and explaining how they have blended with the British norms and traditions.
