Introduction

This paper articulates the importance of a criminal justice agency and various career opportunities for an individual aiming to enter the crime control department of the country. The agency that I would to work for is New York City Police Department (NYPD). NYPD was established in 1845 and has become the largest police force in U.S. It has a broad category of services including air support, bomb disposal, anti- terrorism etc.

Mission of NYPD

NYPD aims to enhance city life by working as partners to the community people according to the constitutional rights and enhance and enforce laws in the city, promote peace, reduce the fear of death or theft and have a safe and peaceful environment to live.

Contemporary Issues

NYPD has built a unit to search for terrorists in the Muslim community of the United States. However, NYPD has been threatened because of its misunderstandings and misconduct. For instance, the Times Square Bomber of May 2010 who was claimed to have connections with the Taliban was thwarted by a nearby food vendor who saw smoke coming out from an SUV and reported it to the police (Greenberg, n.d). The police force of 36,000 officers is responsible for patrolling the streets to protect the public. However, the Intelligence division of NYPD has taken initiatives to take hold of arrests.

Jose Pimental was arrested in 2010 who converted to Islam. He was charged with using homemade bombs. Intelligence division approached the FBI. The FBI concluded that the man was of no threat to the country (Greenberg, n.d). The culture of investigation at NYPD has been enhanced by the self-perpetuation governing bureaucracies.

Role an agency plays in the criminal justice system

Criminal justice process tends to be complex. The police is responsible for investigating crimes and arresting individuals who are suspected of a crime. ...
