Most of the states in US break their crimes into two major groups: felonies and misdemeanors. Whether crime falls into one category or the other it depends on potential punishment. If law provides for imprisonment for longer than a year, it is generally advised felony. If promise punishment is for a year or less, then crime is advised a misdemeanor (Hart, 1961).
