TITLE: A critical review of HONEY AS A TOPICAL TREATMENT FOR WOUNDS by Andrew B Jull, Anthony Rodgers, Natalie Walker.

INTRODUCTION

This paper aims to describe the critical review of the study that aims to be conducted regarding the use of the honey as a tropical treatment for wounds. An e search was carried out of the relevant data base. Chronic and acute wounds are in terms in regular use while clinical assessment. I have been nursing a patient, who has this wound for quite some time following surgery. She required daily dressing from the district nurses. A variety of dressings for wounds are available. One type involves honey as an active substance that assists healing (Jull et al, 2008, pp. 175). Honey is said to be one form of dressing that can be use to heal wounds and has been used since ancient times as a remedy in wound care. The manuka honey-impregnated calcium alginate dressing is in use (Jull, Rodgers & Walker, 2008).

Several other dressing has been used for the patient in question. I wanted to see for myself how the effectiveness of honey dressing would compare to the others that were available and how this knowledge would benefit my patient. My interest in the topic led me to examine the available literature on the subject matter of honey based dressings for wounds. I have therefore decided to critically review the above named article to help me learn about different wounds care and the effect honey had on them.

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE

According to Melynk (2005), evidence base practice is the best approach to health care. This is used because the researcher needs to prove that using this practice will enable the patients to get the best care possible (Davies et al. 2000). In society where medical findings are still ongoing and new evidence is being presented every day, a health care professional will need the most accurate evidence to enhance the care given to patients. Each patient has individual care needs as such using evidence base practice will give each patient the specific care they so desire. (Sackett el al 2000) who see EBP as a best approach which underpin practice with the used of good quality evidence when making decisions in caring for patient. The significance of the Evidence based practice in nursing is that it integrates the best evidence from the research with existing resources into decision making so that the health care of the individual patients can be maintained, patient preferences and clinical expertise can be best practiced (DiCenso, Cullum & Ciliska , 1998, pp. 38). The practice of nursing is considered to be information intensive. The research evidence is based on the health care as a process by which decisions are made about a group of patients or specific populations. It is expected that the professionals of health care can synthesize, critique, read the findings of research and interpret ...
