Part of the confusion stems from the variety of terms used to indicate environmentally friendly practices. Some ecoclaim labels currently used on product packaging include environmentally safe, environmentally friendly, environmentally preferable, ecosafe, Earth smart, recyclable, (bio)degradable, ozone friendly, preconsumer, postconsumer, (essentially/practically) nontoxic, compostable, CFC-free, the three-chasing-arrows recycling symbol, and the Society of the Plastics Industry's symbol/code that indicates the type of plastic from which a particular product is made.
