How does business support diversity in the workforce?

The world's increasing globalization requires more interaction among people from diverse cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds than ever before. (Gerald , Dwight , Carmen 2003) Past businesses had a hard time with diversification in the workplace. Capitalizing on diversity in the workplace has become an important issue for businesses today. For this reason the need for diversity is needed. Businesses that do not recognize the change of needing diversity in the workplace is setting themselves up for failure. (Gerald , Dwight , Carmen 2003)

The Issue of Diversity and Communication

During the 80's, the insurance industry were not as diversified as it should have been. There were many challenges before they recognized the need to diversify. The major changes in the insurance industry started in the 80's. The area I lived in had a migration of people from Mexico and Vietnam. (Maria, 2004) There were a need for insurance agents to work in those communities, but the insurance company I worked for only had English speaking people. As you can imagine, this created a major problem. Finally, the insurance industry realized that diversity in the workplace was a reality. (Gerald , Dwight , Carmen 2003) Once Spanish and Vietnamese speaking employees were hire, there was issue of understanding cultures. Not understanding cultural differences can create more problems than you can imagine in the workplace.

How is diversity beneficial to both the organization and its employees

Diversity adds value to an organization. First, the organization must understand the need to diversify. Most organizations are now diversity conscious. Diversity helps to appreciate the differences of peoples' cultures and talents. An organization's success and competitiveness depends upon its ability to embrace diversity and realize the benefits. (Gerald , Dwight , Carmen 2003) The diverse workforce enable a company to offer broader service range, offer a variety of viewpoints and ideas, because of all the different experiences. With a diverse workforce corporation can enhance their reputation as being fair and equal. It also can help to attract and retain talented people. Profitable companies such as Walmart, understands that teaching diversity in the workplace creates a comfortable and productive work environment.

What challenges are organizations faced with managing a diverse work population?

Diversity in the workplace can also create diversity in the other areas of life. When companies value diversity it gives the organization the ability to utilize the opinions and viewpoints of all it employees to create a better working environment as well as allowing the employees to know that the company they represent cares about its workers. Manager's understand this concept of diversity and how important diversity is to the success of a companies ability to implement programs that continues to develop a harmonious and diverse workplace.
