Deconstructing Context: Geography

Geographic specificity in constructing both leading theories in geography and the "other geographies" or "distant geographies" perhaps should not be surprising in light of the institutionalization of geography as an academic discipline.

Few geographers have attempted to contextualize this specificity in the epistemology of geography and to offer suggestions for what may be done to redress it.

In this article, we focus on a particular historical-geographic moment--the rise of urban areas--and outline our vision for the development of theory in geography emanating from a rapidly growing number of geographers working on the dynamic transformations of urban areas.

We term this effort "theorizing geographies of urban areas.

"The plurality of the term represents a deliberate attempt to theorize the diverse experiences and trajectories of transformations in urban areas.

There is thus no singular geography of urban areas but, rather, multiple pathways and diversities.

By the same token, there should be many models and theories of these transformations in geography.

The Greater Toronto Area is the Toronto CMA.

There are also cities that are in the Toronto CMA that are in Simcoe County and Dufferin County.

Bradford, for example, has a greater tie to Toronto then Oshawa does.

The GTA is an area defined by the provincial government, including the entirety of the four regional municipalities, and no part of Simcoe County or Dufferin County.

The Federal Government is what makes me think the Greater Toronto Area is the Toronto CMA.

CMAs are the accepted standard of the 'Metropolitan Area' and are used for census purposes.

The member municipalities of the CMA are locations that rely on Toronto, while areas outside of the CMA rely on other centers.

That is what is officially accepted by all major bodies, and not just for Toronto (e. g. The Greater Vancouver Regional District, Vancouver's version of the GTA, is no different then the Vancouver ...
