Descriptive statistics are figures that are used to summarize and express data. The word "data" refers to information that was gathered from an experiment, a survey, a historical record, etc. (By the way, "data" is plural. A piece of information is called a reference system " .) If we look at birth certificates, for example, descriptive statistics could be the percentage of certificates issued in the State of New York, or the average age of the mother. Any other number that we choose to calculate also counts as a descriptive statistic for the data from which the statistic is calculated. Several descriptive statistics are often used at a time, to give a complete picture of data. (Mann, 1995)

Descriptive statistics such as these provide an overview of American society. It is interesting to note, for example, we pay people who educate our children and protect our citizens have much less than we pay people who take care of our feet and teeth. Generalizing from our data to another set of cases is a matter of inferential statistics which we will study soon. Descriptive statistics are used simply to describe the sample of interest. They are used at trial to have a feel for the data in the second for use in statistical tests themselves, and in the third to indicate the error associated with results and graphical output.
