Developmental Psychology

Thesis Statement: The study of developmental psychology through various theories assists in understanding human behavior, development and psychological treatment.

Discussion

Developmental psychology involves the study of the factors that shape human behavior, from the prenatal stage to adulthood. The developmental psychologist can focus their attention on an aspect of problems, including those relating to the development of thought or perception or may focus their attention on a specific period of life, such as childhood or adolescence. In this way, the psychology of children or adolescents is part of the general branch of developmental psychology. Evolutionary psychology and developmental psychology study the physical, mental and changes that occur in human beings over time in the life course of individuals (Anandalakshmy, Grinder, 1970). When we study we show that the evolutionary psychologists describe, analyze, explain, predict, intervene and evaluate. Physical growth or development is regulated from inside the body and occurs in an orderly manner and subject to wide variations in standards of environmental conditions. As the organism grows, the behavior appears clearly depends on the development of physical structures.

The developmental psychopathology adopts a developmental perspective in the study and treatment of psychopathology. For decades, behavioral scientists have attempted to predict adult psychopathology from measurements taken in childhood. Blatt and Luyten consider the "predictability" as the core task of developmental psychopathology (Dawes, Faust, Meehl, 1989). This task is "to understand the events changing patterns of adaptation (or inadequate) and the links between these patterns over time", hence the definition of developmental psychopathology as "the study of the origins and the growth patterns of individual behavior inappropriate, regardless of age of onset, whatever the causes, regardless of their behavioral changes, and as complex as the course of their development”.

The most influential theories, which provides the basis for future studies on developmental psychology were; Freud's stages of psychosexual development, Erikson's stages of psychosocial development and Piaget's stages of cognitive development. We will continue our discussion on the topic with the implication of these theories.

Psychosexual Stages of Personality Development by Sigmund Freud (Physical)

Freud was convinced that the origins of neurosis are found in the children's experiences of patients. This provision was the basis of psychoanalysis as a research method and as a method of psychotherapy and treatment of neurosis and depression. Thus, he became the first psychologist, who pointed out the importance of research to understand the nature of childhood psyche. In his opinion, the basic features of human personality are formed almost entirely by the fifth year of life.

From the perspective of psychoanalysis, the child is in its development a number of psychosexual stages. During this period the child acts as autoerotic being, that is, he gets sensual pleasure from stimulation of the erogenous zones of your body by parents or other persons during the normal course of the educational process. It is believed that each of these stages is characterized by its own erogenous zone.
