The company began its operation as the first international door to door express delivery service in the world. When the founders established the company in 1969, they introduced the global air express at the same time for the world. It began by providing shipping documents through the air.

Originally established to deliver documents between Honolulu and San Francisco, DHL has extended the company's services all over the world in the end of 70's. The company was generally for Inter Continental and offshore deliveries, but FedEx's success tempted them to expand the services in all over the America from 1983 and onwards. The German Post in 1998, started acquiring company shares, and reached finally to the majority of ownership in the year 2001 and finished the acquisition in the year 2002. German Post DHL then efficiently expands into the Express division. Now, the shares of Express are well known for the brand DHL with Deutsche Post's.
