Diabetes and Supplement

Introduction

Numerous herbal medications have been suggested for the treatment of diabetes. The antidiabetic result of fenugreek ethanolic extract (Trigonella-foenum graecum L) was examined in typical and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of fenugreek extracts between 14 days on the level of serum glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, urea, uric acid, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were estimated. (Prasanna, pp: 35) Treatment of fenugreek extract alleviated body weight loss in diabetic rats. Administration of the extensively reduced serum glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, urea, uric acid, creatinine, AST, and ALT levels, whereas it overall improved serum insulin in diabetic rats but not in normal rats. A comparison was made between the action of fenugreek extract and glibenclamide, the known anti-diabetic drug. The antidiabetic outcomes of the extract were alike to that observed for glibenclamide. It is concluded that the plant should be considered as an outstanding candidate for future studies on diabetes mellitus (Prasanna, pp: 36).

Discussion and Analysis

Diabetes is presently rising at a fast rate throughout the world and is the 16th leading cause of worldwide deaths. Current number of diabetic patients worldwide is 150 million, and this is likely to rise to 300 million or more by the year 2025. Causes for this growth includes increase in sedentary lifestyle, utilization of energy rich diet, obesity, higher life span, and others. Areas with greatest dangers are Asia and Africa, where diabetes mellitus (DM) incidence could raise to 2- to 3-fold the current level. (Khosla, pp: 173)In recent years, the role of alternative therapeutic approaches has become very popular. Nature has been a source of medicinal treatments for thousands of years, and plant-based systems continue to play an essential role in primary health care, 80% of underdeveloped and developing world. This is an important public health problem in the United States, affecting 24.1 million people, of whom 6.6 million are estimated to have diagnosed. From 2002 to 2007, the number of individuals in the nation with a diagnosis of diabetes increased from 12.1 to 17.5 million. In addition, an estimated 54 million people have impaired glucose tolerance, which places them at high risk of developing diabetes. Approximately one third of individuals born in the country during 2000 are at risk of developing diabetes in their lifetime. The social, economic and personal costs of diabetes are enormous. This describes the results, complications, and risk factors of diabetes. In addition, prevention and complications are discussed, together with the social costs, economic and personal associated with diabetes. Last, but this article addresses issues of quality of life and political implications. Many herbs have been recommended for the treatment of diabetes. Herbal medicines are often considered less toxic and with fewer side effects than synthetic ones (Khosla, pp: 174).
