Discontent-A True Facet of Human Nature

Introduction

This research paper is aimed at providing the literary arguments about the play beauty, created by Martine. An effort is made to create an argumentative structure based on personal observation that would provide the analytical views on the literature work done on the subject matter with the source of scholarly works and articles.

The dissatisfaction of one's life might lead to unforeseen circumstances that one would never wish for in a life time; hence, humanity must live a satisfied life with what they are bestowed by God.

Discussion

Beauty by Jane Martin was a story about jealousy and discontent of the two main characters, Carla and Bethany, who were opposite to each other. Carla was beautiful however an unsuccessful model with no brains and personality. On the other hand, Bethany was an accountant with high income and success in writing short stories but she was not satisfied with her appearance. Both girls wished for what the other had: Carla wanted to be smart and Bethany wanted to be beautiful (Dixon, p. 14).

The writer used “the genie” to reveal Bethany's desires to be beautiful and her discontent of her life. She saw beauty as a major importance in life like beauty would be the real deal of life. She believed that it would bring her much good than she already had. However, Carla was the one who knew the disadvantages and problems of being beautiful and was trying to tell Bethany not to wish for it. But of course, she did and she finally got what she wanted (Pieper & Pieper, p. 1).

In my view, the message hidden in this story states that people only see the bad side of their life and the good side of the others' and it shows that people value the appearance more than what is inside. For instance, Bethany had a successful career, a personality and intelligence, but she was unsatisfied with her looks and wanted to be beautiful. According to my understanding, she failed to see the good things she already had inside her and that caused her to make a shallow decision by wishing to be like Carla (Alma College, pp. n.d.).

As in real life, we can learn from Bethany and Carla that jealousy can only bring us troubles. This story suggests that being discontent in our life can make us unhappy and that will lead us to be jealous of others. We should just be satisfied with ourselves and look at the good side of our life and what we have, or not we will face a similar situation, like Carla and Bethany (Pieper & Pieper, p. 1).

The female beauty has continuously been explored by the novels, print media, electronic media and the fairy tale publications. The feminism presented in the story is much like the traditional views that have been continuously printed and presented by Disney heroines. Feminism has been equated with passivity and victimage by the critics who claim that the recent productions ...
