Chapter 1: Introduction

Travel and tourism is the world's largest industry and the same is true for the EC. It accounts for 5-6 per cent of GDP and in the EC accounts for approximately 7.5 million jobs, depending on the range of coverage which is used. The OECD provides a useful source of statistics and has also played an important role in encouraging tourism from its early days in the late 1940s, when it existed as the OEEC. However, the key question is whether the European Commission to play a more active role in politics and tourism.
