Abstract

Negative political advertisements have been an interesting topic of debate in relation to their effects on voters during the times of election. It can be seen in United States that politicians use negative political ads to present a positive image by highlighting their positive things and revealing the negatives about opposing candidates. No one can deny the fact that this act election politics is not liked by the people, but the interesting thing to know is that there is a kind of acceptance of negative political advertising that's affects the minds of voter. This papers aims to discuss the issue of negative political advertisement and its effects on voters.

Description: Some people agree that after hearing a negative political ad they might change their opinion later on, while there are others who simply won't change their opinion no matter what the ad says. It all comes down to whether the person believes in what he or she thinks or is simply taken by an ad that could brain wash them in a matter of seconds.

In the U.S. the negative political advertising clearly illustrates the conflict between what people feel and want. There is no doubt about the fact that public does not like negative political advertising, but it is also a reality that negative political advertisement affects the mindset of younger people. It would not be wrong to say that negative political advertisement not only creates a corrupt image about the political process but also induces disbelief toward all politicians. In addition, individuals who are not particularly interested in political affairs are less motivated to learn about the political thing, but are likely vote. For this category of voters, political advertising is often their only source of information or their only motivation to vote. It can be seen that political advertisements are displayed several times as repetition is a key to build understanding as well as acceptance of the message in public. In fact, candidates believe that their chances to win are good if they convey a negative message about the challenger with more repetitions.

Further, it is also important to know that the negative publicity has not invented a new kind of conduct to control policy or political message. In fact, it can be seen only as a delivery method preferred by the candidates as practice of secular politics, which highlights weaknesses of the opponent in relation to his or her personality, achievements and positions. It would be fair to say that any negative political advertisement is also meant to discredit the public image of the candidate and his/ her electoral credibility. In today's political landscape it is almost impossible to see a politician or a candidate who has does not have any interest to convey negative message or exploit public emotions in election advertising against his/ her opponent.
