Domestic and Global Inequalities

Introduction

The social inequality and disparities are found in the societies not only today but they have been prevalent for years. These disparities make the society question if domestic and global inequalities highlight the inevitability and functionality of stratification. Human geographers became directly interested in the study of inequality when the focus of the discipline shifted to examining spatial differences using quantitative methods and exploring how different variables varied across space (Britton,2000,418-434). However, the purpose of this essay is to identify if the local and the global disparities depict the functionality of stratification.

Critical Assessment

The increasing inequalities, both global and domestic have been considered as a significant issue by the social; scientists and the politicians in the past 20 years. Such increasing concern requires the social explanation of these disparities. The causes of social inequality are mainly economic, cultural and social. These factors contribute towards the social stratification. Now the question is how the inequalities make up the stratification inevitable. The answer is that in some societies, unemployment and low wages are the main cause of inequality, resulting in rich and poor social groups. This situation encourages social tension and political instability, which in turn slows down foreign investment.

Natural disasters and armed conflicts generate social breakdown in poor communities because many are forced to flee their homes and become refugees (Hall, 2007, 1-11).

We are witnessing and participating in the enrichment of a few and increasing social inequalities. The only way we can stop these processes of poverty is to fight for a more balanced society. On the domestic front, the social strata have been used to help account for the variability of governmental and community preparedness and response to emergencies and disasters such as hurricanes. A key question involves asking if there is a link between race/class and the speed at which help in such emergencies is mobilized (Tickamyer, 2000, 805-813). Are communities, or parts of communities that have members of different social strata treated differently in such events? Another example of a contemporary application of social stratification principles would be within ...
