Drug Addition in Our Youth

For years, studies show that drug use among adolescents is a cultural phenomenon that although this tends to be maintained. Alcohol and nicotine (cigarettes), the two legal drugs is the most popular and most harmful in young people. Indeed, a study by Statistics Canada shows that between 1992 and 1996, the percentage of smokers among students in 7th, 9th, 10th, and 12th grades in New Brunswick increased from 26 to 33 percent, despite all the federal anti-smoking campaigns.  (Keefe, 2006)

The cycle of consumption

To understand the phenomenon of drug, one must first understand how the body reacts to it. First, the body's response to a drug depends not only on its concentration, but the sensitivity of the affected cells. This sensitivity is controlled by genetic factors and changes in the body in response to prolonged exposure to the substance. As the organism is exposed to the toxic substance, it adapts to its presence and level of sensitivity decreases until there is tolerance. If drug use continues, tolerance becomes quietly and insidiously addictive. Finally, the potential for abuse of a substance depends on several factors, including:

the factor of drug addiction;

availability of drugs in society;

The ratio of the potential danger and immediate physical and psychological effects of drugs.

Signs

For a parent, it's never easy to hear that their child is taking drugs. However, if you suspect that your teenager has a drug problem (drug dependence), do not expect there to be dependence before acting. A simple experiment and you must intervene. Adolescents need to learn what are the alternatives, the effects and consequences. We must therefore pay close attention to changes in behavior and environment that you're teen could be signs of drug use. Some of these signs:
